Roof artificial horizon

A rectangular mahogany trough, with an edge broken, for a mercurial roof artificial horizon. The rest of the instrument is missing.

John Lort Stokes (1812-85), the original owner, was an officer in the Royal Navy who spent most of his career as a hydrographic surveyor.
