Binoculars
Prismatic binoculars with a magnification power of seven. The binoculars have a metal body and loops for a carrying strap (now missing). There is no central focussing as each eyepiece focusses independently.
The inscription 'R.E.L. Canada 1945' appears on the body. Research Enterprises Limited (REL) was set up in 1940 by the Canadian government in order to supply the country's wartime needs for optical instruments. Production began in 1941. As well as rangefinders and other equipment, the company made many 6 x 30 and 7 x 50 binoculars. They were tested by being sprayed with water and then dropped into a box of sand from six feet. By 1945 REL had made about 25,000 of this model of binocular. REL was also received support from the U.S. Bureau of Standards and the British Admiralty.
