Plain scale
This small brass instrument has a protractor on one side and a plain scale marked on the other. Like the Gunter scale or Gunter rule, the plain scale was designed to help navigators with the complex mathematical calculations they had to do by reducing the computation to a series of measurements along the rule using a pair of dividers. The plain scale proved particularly popular among Dutch seamen in the 17th and 18th centuries.
