The first 10 inches (approx) has been sawn off at some time. The scale starts at 9. The original length of the scale (not including the slide) must have been about 31". A brass hook has been fitted to help move the slide.
This is a transitional instrument, being set with brass studs at the places where divider points were most often set and is also fitted with a slide for some calculations.
