Mariner's compass

Mariner's compass with hand-coloured compass card. The North point is marked by a fleur-de-lis. The other main points are marked with the initial letter of the Italian words for the winds from those directions. There is also a quadrantal degree scale around the outer edge of the card (4 x 90 degrees). The needle is fixed to the underside of the card.

Bowl: Dia. 7.1" (18.0 cm) Wood, glazed. Fitted with detachable base with a brass pivot at centre. Inside of bowl painted white. Fitted with a wooden push-fit lid.

Card: Dia. 4.9" (12.5 cm) Heavy paper, white with black, red and blue markings. Graduated to 32 points and quadrantally in degrees. One brass balancing weight and one blob of sealing wax attached to underside.

Needle: Two parallel needles 3.75" (9.5 cm) long attached to underside of card by pasted paper.

Pivot: Brass pivot stem 1.35" (3.5 cm) long mounted at centre of bowl.
