Boat's compass

A boat's compass in brass bowl with paraffin lamp for lighting purposes attached. The circular glass through which the card is viewed is set obliquely in a square copper plate (to be screwed to the thwart from underneath) secured to the top of the bowl.

The card is 5" diameter and the N & E points are decorated, probably the latest in existence. Halls took out a patent No. 19521 in 1890 for a boat's compass in a thwart. This is probably it.

Plate 8.9" x 8.9" (22.5 cm x 22.5 cm)
