Crown compass

Overhead crown compass. Brass. Paper covered 5" mica card, black with white graduations and in points with 7 lettered, fleur-de-lys and ornamented E point. An outer circle of graduations in degrees on a white ground has been partially cut of; so the same pate was evidently used for printing 6" azimuth compass cards. The card is backed with old printed paper; a custom which was confined to very few makers. It is balanced with sealing wax. The flat needle is 3/8" wide and 1/16" thick and has rounded ends. It is expanded to 5/8" wide at the centre to take the jewelled cap which is fitted so that the card is about 3/8" below the point of the pivot. The brass pivot is carried by a stalk set in the bottom glass. A brass cap in the top of the bowl surrounds the cap and prevents the card from lifting off.
