Mariner's compass

Mariner's compass. Brass, graduated quadrantally in degrees, card mounted in brass bowl set in gimbals in a small binnacle.

Boat's compass and stand of HMS 'Exeter' which took part in the Battle of the River Plate and was used to con the ship during the action with the Graf Spee (13 December 1939). After the fore bridge was wrecked during the battle this compass was used to steer the ship.
