Variation compass

Bowl-Rectangular box with brass base plate and wooden sides, top glazed and fitted with a sliding wooden cover, on the underside of which is a brass strip for sliding over brass strip for sliding over brass stud of needle lifting mechanism. Silvered brass scales graduated from 0-23 degrees either side of 0 are fitted at North and South ends of box. Needle lifting mechanism opertaed by abrass rod at South end of box.
Needle-Edge bar type, length 5.4" (13.6cm) with expanded centre to accommodate jewelled pivot cap.
Pivot-Steel pin secured at centre of base plate engages in pivot cap in needle.
