Dry card compass

Bowl-Copper with brass band 0.7" (1.8cm) wide fitted to upper edge. Dome-shaped lead balancing weight fitted to base. Inside of bowl painted white and fitted with two lubber lines, one of which is a black lubber line carried on a brass plate which is part of the card stopping mechanism, operated by a brass shaft with milled knob sliding through the gimbal ring mount. The other consists of ten white threads stretched across a black metal frame. Mounted in brass gimal ring 9.5" (24.1cm) dia. which is attached to a U-shaped brass bracket, having a central mounting spigot which engages in a brass socket. Brass verge ring carries two sight vanes. The forward one 6.3" (16cm) height is hinged and of open frame type, fitted with sliding frame containing lens, and hinged mirror. The after sight vane height 3.4" (8.6cm) has narrow slit and a sliding frame with coloured glass filter and a telescopic sight. A brass bar 8.3" (21.1cm) length is mounted across verge ring, at the centre of which is fitted a swivelling mirror.
Card-Dia. 6.9" (17.5cm) Mica covered with black paper with white markings. Graduated to 1/2 points with decorated N & E points. White metal ring around rim is graduated quadrantally in degrees.
Needle-Flat bar type 6.9" (17.5cm) length with square ends and expanded centre to accommodate pivot cup.
Pivot-Brass pivot stem attached to base of bowl, into which is screwed brass pivot pin. A cone-shaped brass pivot cup with red jewel at top screwed through centre of card and expanded needle.
Base-Wodd 13.25 x 13.25" with wooden box-type screen 13.6 x 13.8 x 11.25"
