Bowl
Sugar bowl, part of a breakfast service that belonged to Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). The oval bowl and cover are painted in full colour and gilt. Nelson's shield of arms surmounted by a Viscount's coronet is shown on either side of the bowl within the motto 'TRIA JUNCTA IN UNO' (three joined in one). The bowl and cover have borders of oak leaves and acorns with gilt mock ring handles at the ends of the bowl and a knob on the cover. The latter has the chelengk crest on one side and the 'SAN JOSEF' crest on the other with the motto 'FAITH AND WORKS'. In the inventory of the contents of his house at Merton, sold by Lady Hamilton in 1809, a dessert and tea service of this pattern is referred to as the 'Nelson Set'.
