Basin
Slop basin, part of a breakfast service that belonged to Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). The bowl is painted in full colour and gilt. The exterior has a deep oak leaf and acorn border edged with gold bands, pierced at intervals with four semicircular panels containing two shields of Nelson's coat of arms within the motto 'TRIA JUNCTA IN UNO' (three joined in one), surmounted by a Viscount's coronet, his 'SAN JOSEF' crest with the motto 'FAITH AND WORKS' and chelengk crest. There is another oak leaf border around the interior of the bowl. In the inventory of the contents of his house at Merton, sold by Lady Hamilton in 1809, a dessert and tea service of this pattern is referred to as the 'Nelson Set'.
