Dip circle
Dip circle, inscribed 'Dollond London'. It comprises a six-inch steel needle that rotates in a vertical plane against a circular silvered scale marked from 0 to 90 degrees (to 20 minutes) in each quadrant, with 0 at the horizontal. Two spirit levels are attached to the top of the instrument, with a locking mechanism operated from one side. The lid of the fitted wooden box forms a stand with three levelling feet. When fitted into the lid for use, the circle can be rotated and has a direction indicator piece with an arrow inscribed on it. The lid has a circular grid lightly inscribed on it. The box also contains a brass compass and spare needle. A further piece is now missing.
