Cup
Breakfast cup, part of a breakfast service that belonged to Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). The cup is painted in full colour and gilt with a border of oak leaves and acorns inside and out. Semicircular panels are reserved in the border containing Nelson's 'SAN JOSEF' crest with his motto 'FAITH AND WORKS' and his chelengk crest. Opposite the handle is his shield of arms within the motto 'TRIA JUNCTA IN UNO', a Viscount's coronet above. The handle is gilt. In the inventory of the contents of his house at Merton, sold by Lady Hamilton in 1809, a dessert and tea service of this pattern is referred to as the 'Nelson Set'. There are nine similar cups AAA4560-AAA4568 in the museum's collections.
