Aneroid barometer

An aneroid barometer by Elliott Bros made, according to the label on the dial, for the 'transit of [Venus] expedition 1874'. On the face of the instrument it reads 'ELLIOTT Bros/ 449, Strand/ London/ 2057' 'Compensated' '?420' on the back '?420'. The instrument is in a brass case, fitted with a suspension ring, containing the mechanism. The dial is silvered with black-painted markings. Graduated in tenths and twentieths from 24 to 31, and with the words RAIN/ CHANGE/ FAIR. An adjusting screw is accessible at the back of the case for setting the instrument. The needle and glass face-plate are missing. The instrument is in a leather covered case with velvet lining, dark maroon in colour. The case is marked NAV0768.1
