Plate

Porcelain plate, a later copy of examples in Nelson's oak leaf service. It is painted in full colour and gilt. In the centre, the coat of arms of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) within the motto 'TRIA JUNCTA IN UNO' (three joined in one), with supporters, below an incorrect version of his motto on a ribbon: 'PALMAM OUT (sic) MERUIT FERAT'. Above, the chelengk and 'SAN JOSEF' crests, the latter incorrectly inscribed with the motto 'FAITH AND WORD' and also a Duke's and Viscount's coronet. The tree in the chief of the shield is also incorrect. The border is painted with very unrealistic oak leaves and acorns with blue swags on either side of the plate, inscribed 'Nelson', 'San Josef' and 'Nelson', '22 April' (the date of the battle of Copenhagen 2 April).
