Rain gauge

Rain gauge comprising of a grey painted brass can (diam 7.2" (18.3 cm)) with screw-in funnel.

This was the rain gauge made for the Astronomer Royal, John Pond at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich by Edward Troughton and installed between c.1814 and c.1900. Rainfall had previously been recorded by John Flamsteed who had a rain gauge installed at the Observatory between 1676 and 1682 but like almost all the rest of Flamsteed's apparatus, this was sold off at the time and is unlikely to find its way back into the Observatory's collections.

Grey painted brass can (diam 7.2" (18.3 cm)) with screw-in funnel. The funnel height and end diameter were enlarged in 1879.
Original flange 6" (15.2 cm)
New flange 8" (20.3 cm)
