Caddy

One of a pair of shaped porcelain tea caddies without lids (see AAA4581), a later copy of Nelson's oak leaf service pattern. It is painted on one side with the arms of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) within the motto 'TRIA JUNCTA IN UNO' (three joined in one), an incorrect version of his personal motto on a ribbon below 'PALMAM OUT MERUIT FERAT' (let he who earned it bear the palm). His crests are not shown. At the top and bottom are borders of oak leaves and acorns and on the shoulders blue swags with gilt inscriptions 'Nelson', 'San Josef' and 'Nelson', '22 April' (the date of the battle of Copenhagen 2 April).
