Plate
Dessert plate, part of a service that belonged to Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). The plate is painted in colours and gilt, in the centre is a foul anchor within laurel branches tied with blue ribbon and with the gilt inscriptions 'San Josef/Nelson/2nd April/Baltic/14th Feby'. The rim is decorated with a border of oak leaves and acorns within two gilt bands. Blue swags top and bottom are inscribed in gold 'Nelson', 'Glorious 1st Augt' and 'Nelson', 'Aboukir'. In the inventory of the contents of his house at Merton, sold by Lady Hamilton in 1809, a dessert, dinner and tea service of this pattern is referred to as the 'Baltic Set'.
