Jug
Milk jug, part of a tea service that belonged to Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). It is helmet-shaped with a pronounced lip and a high handle with a thumb piece and it has a gilt rim and base. On the front is painted a foul anchor within laurel branches tied with blue ribbon and with the gilt inscriptions 'Nelson/2nd April/Baltic'. Oak leaves and acorns within two gilt bands are painted around the body. Below the lip is inscribed in gilt 'The Glorious 1st August'. In the inventory of the contents of his house at Merton, sold by Lady Hamilton in 1809, a dessert, dinner and tea service of this pattern are referred to as the 'Baltic Set'.
