Saucer
Saucer, part of a tea service that belonged to Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). In the centre is a foul anchor within laurel branches tied with blue ribbon, incribed in gilt '14 Feby/Nelson/2 April/Baltic' (dates of the battles of Cape St Vincent and Copenhagen). The rim is painted with a border of oak leaves and acorns, blue swags top and bottom are inscribed in gold: 'Nelson', 'San Josef' and Nelson', 'Glorious 1st Augt'. In the inventory of the contents of his house at Merton, sold by Lady Hamilton in 1809, a dessert, dinner and tea service of this pattern are referred to as the 'Baltic Set'.
