Plate
Creamware dessert plate of a similar pattern to a service that belonged to Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). In the centre is a foul anchor within laurel branches tied with blue ribbon, inscribed 'Nelson/2nd April/Baltic' (date of the battle of Copenhagen). The edge is painted with a border of oak leaves and acorns, blue swags top and bottom are inscribed in brown 'Nelson', 'the San Josef', '14th Feby' (the battle of Cape St Vincent) and 'Nelson', 'the Glorious 1st of August', 'Aboukir' (the battle of the Nile). In the inventory of the contents of his house at Merton, sold by Lady Hamilton in 1809, a dessert, dinner and tea service of this pattern are referred to as the 'Baltic Set'. There are two similar plates in the Museum's collections AAA4594-AAA4595.
