Horary quadrant
Red marble cylindrical plinthwith brass vertical rod attached to it, having a screw at the top end which is attached to the rectangular brass 'quadrant'. Hour numbers meant to represent Italian hours but are not consistent.
This is a horary quadrant and is signed 'Bernard Nerici frce Anno 1762 Lucca'. As several essential elements are missing, date line, sight vane and some zodiacal signs, this instrument may be a fake. The quality of engraving is poor. It is marked for the latitude 28 degrees.
There are 2 graduated arcs, the upper one designed to indicate the apparent time, the lower to represent Italian hours i.e. 24 hour cycle from sunset. There is every possibilitty that this is a fake for the following reasons:
1. There are no sight vanes.
2. There is no date line against which to place the bead on the plumb line.
3. The signs of the zodiacs are incompleted and have been inscribed, apparently, quite crudely & haphazardly on the dial.
Bead is missing.
designed for Lat 28.
