Sextant with Artificial Horizon
The sextant has a black cardboard frame and index arm with no clamping screw or tangent screw. It has two index shades in red and green and the glasses are non-adjustable. It has a wooden telescope bracket that is also non-adjustable. Attached to the sextant is a fixed cardboard telescope measuring 101 mm in length.
The artificial horizon consists of a spirit level mounted on a wooden block attached to the frame below the horizon glass.
The instrument has a cardboard scale in white from -3° to 123° by 30 arcminutes, measuring to 120°. The sextant has a white cardboard vernier measuring to 1 minute.
Einson-Freeman started in 1909 as a lithographic company and after 1933 made jigsaw puzzles. The production of simple cardboard sextants was probably part of World War II efforts.
