Square-Each side of square graduated 12-0-12 and inscribed "OMBRA RECTA", "OMBRA VERSA", "OMBRA RECTA", "OMBRA VERSA". An inner circle is graduated 0-45 (X 8) and inscibed "tramontana" "grecho" "levante" "sirocco" "ostro" "libecoo" "ponente" "maestro". On reverse of square, two sides are graduated 0-12 and inscribed "OMBRA VERSA" "OMBRA RECTA". It also carries a quadrant graduated 0-90 and inscribed "QVADRANTE-HA//LAITVDINE-GRA//XLIII, and three Zodiacal tables.
Sights-Two peep-hole sights 0.75" (1.9cm) long are mounted on alidade 12" (30.5cm) long which is fitted with a third leg set at right angles. Two peep-hole sights are fitted to quadrant on reverse of instrument.
Compass-Dia. 2.5" (6.4cm) mounted at centre of instrument. Fitted with a narrow needle in form of arrow 1.9" (5cm) long, with a brass pivot cap at centre. Graduated 0-45 (x 8) and inscribed T/G/L/S/O/L/P/M .
