Theodolite

Base-Dia. 5.65 (14.3cm) graduated 0-180, 0-180 by 30', with a vernier scale 0-30. Fitted with a milled knob to turn instrument in azimuth. Two spirit levels, one 2" long mounted E-W, the other 1.9" long mounted N-S. A tripod mounting socket is attached to underside of base plate which incorporates a clamp and slow-motion screw, to orientate instrument in azimuth about its spindle.
Compass-Dia. 3.9" (9.7cm) mounted at centre of base. Fitted with an edge bar needle 2.9" (7.4cm) long with a jewelled pivot cap at centre. A needle lifting mechanism is fitted and is operated by a stud at side of compass. Graduated to 8 points, quadrantally in degrees and anti-clockwise to 360 degs.
Vertical arc-Dia. 5.6" (14.2cm) mounted above base on two "A" frame brackets 3.6" high, secured to base at E & W points. It has rack teeth cut on its edge. Graduated on one side 90-0-60 by 30', with a vernier scale 15-0-15. On the other side 30-0-30 by 30' and inscribed "Diff of Hypo. & Base" 100-0-100 by 30' and inscribed "Perp. in 100 of Base" with a fiducial edge. Both vernier scale and fiducial edge are carried on a support, with a milled knob for turning arc in altitude, mounted on base at N point. At upper part of arc are two "Y's" for mounting telescope.
Telescope-Length 10.9cm (27.7cm) erect with cross wire mounting screws (wires missing). Milled knob for focus at O.G. end. Fitted with an eyepiece shutter. A spirit level 3.6" long is attached to underside. Carried on vertical arc by two "Y" mounts.
Tripod-Length 5.9" (15cm). Wooden with brass head and screw attachment. Wooden legs sawn down.
In wooden box 12 x 10 x 6.25" (30.5 x 25.4 x 15.9cm).
