Pocket telescope
This achromatic telescope has seven draw tubes, allowing it it be folded up to a small enough size to fit into a pocket. The barrel is covered in green rayskin and the tubes and objective lens cap are made of German silver. The eyepiece has a sliding cover.
An inscription on the eyepiece tube gives the maker's name and his address as '122 Regent Street, London'. The earliest date that Post Office directories list John Newman at this address is 1827.
