Day or night telescope
This achromatic telescope has three brass draw tubes. The barrel is also made of brass and is decorated with a floral pattern in red and gold. The brass fittings include a sliding sun shade and sliding objective and eyepiece lens covers.
The maker’s name is inscribed on the smallest draw tube, where the telescope is also identified as being for use at ‘Day or Night’. It therefore has a large objective lens in order to gather as much light is possible when used at night.
The telescope is said to have belonged to Captain Eastwick, master of the East Indiaman in which the Duke of Wellington sailed to India in 1798, although no certain evidence of this has been found.
