Naval telescope

This achromatic telescope has a tapering mahogany barrel and a single silvered-brass draw tube. The fittings are also made of silvered brass and include a pivoted eyepiece cover and sliding sunshade. The telescope's original wooden box also survives.

The maker's name is engraved on the draw tube as 'Dollond / London'. There is also a maker's label on the inside of the box lid, recording that the company had by that time been appointed as ‘Optical Mathematical and Philosophical / Instrument Maker / to Her Majesty’ (Queen Victoria, reigned 1837-1901).

A further inscription on the draw tube records that the telescope was given 'To Captn John Parker R.N. in token of the high esteem / & regard felt for him by the late Isaac Minet Esqr / of Baldwyns Kent, / Presented by his Widow March 1839.'
