Naval telescope
This achromatic telescope has a tapering leather-covered barrel and a single silvered-brass draw tube. The other fittings are also made of silvered brass, including an objective lens cap and a sliding eyepiece cover.
This type of telescope was commonly used on board ship in the 19th century for general sighting observations. It has a fairly large objective lens to help observation in poor light and at night.
The maker's name is engraved on the draw tube as ‘A. Ross / London’. A second inscription on the collar around the end of the barrel records its original owner as 'Captn H. Caldwell R.N.' Caldwell died in 1867.
