Walking stick telescope
Walking stick telescopes like this were made as gentlemen's fashion accessories rather than as serious observing instruments. This example has an achromatic telescope with a single brass draw tube fitted into it. The brass fittings include a screw-on objective lens cap, which also acts as the top of the stick.
The walking stick and barrel of the telescope have been painted to resemble bamboo. The name of the telescope maker is inscribed on the draw tube as 'Wm Harris & Co,, / 50 HOLBORN - LONDON.'
