Naval telescope
This achromatic telescope has a tapered mahogany barrel with a black leather cover. It has a single brass draw tube. There is a brass cap for the objective lens, while the eyepiece has a sliding cover.
An inscription on the draw tube reads ‘Spencer Browning & Rust / LONDON / Improved’. The firm of Spencer Browning & Rust began trading from Wapping in about 1784.
A second inscription names ‘Mr St Quintin, / 49, Green St, Grosvenor Square.’, presumably a previous owner. In addition, a handwritten label on the telescope records that it once belonged to Admiral Darby, who died in 1790.
