Officer of the Watch telescope
This Officer of the Watch telescope has a leather-covered barrel and a single draw tube. The silvered brass fittings include a pivoted eyepiece cover (now missing). The objective lens cap is also missing and there is some damage to the objective end of the telescope. The name of the maker or retailer is inscribed on the draw tube: 'Coombes, / Optician & Admiralty agent. / DEVONPORT'.
Telescopes like this were commonly used on ships. This example belonged to W.J.T. Saunders, whose name is inscribed on the collar of the barrel. Saunders joined the Royal Navy in 1892 and retired as a Commander in 1906, but was called back into service during the First World War, 1914-18. He died in 1953.
