Pocket telescope
This achromatic telescope has a mahogany barrel and three brass draw tubes. The other brass fittings include a sliding eyepiece cover and an objective lens cap. The leather carrying case survives, although its strap is now missing.
The maker's name on the draw tube (‘Bate, London’) probably refers to Robert Bate (1782-1847), although his two sons also worked for the family firm. The numeral ‘V’ is roughly inscribed on a number of hidden parts, presumably as part of the manufacturing and assembly process.
