Naval telescope
John Pasco (1774–1853), as Nelson’s flag-lieutenant on Victory at Trafalgar, was responsible for sending the famous signal ‘England expects that every man will do his duty’. This telescope is typical of the type used for signalling at that date and the commemorative plaque has the signal flags around the border. It was passed down through the family and later presented by Commander Pasco to HRH Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (1844–1900), second son of Queen Victoria. The occasion was Prince Alfred’s visit to the Australian colony of Victoria as a Royal Navy captain commanding Galatea, to which he was commissioned in 1867.
