Naval telescope
This achromatic telescope has a tapering leather-covered barrel and a single silvered-brass draw tube. The other silvered-brass fittings include a sliding eyepiece cover. The objective lens cap is missing. The telescope is contained in a mahogany box. This telescope is typical of the type used on board ship in the early 19th century for general observations and was particularly useful in low light due to its relatively large objective lens.
The maker's name is engraved on the draw tube - 'HARRIS / Optician to the King / 22. Cornhill.' - as is an inscription recording that the telescope was a gift 'From Captain Hobson RN, / to his Friend / Lieut Thos Baldock RN'.
