Polygonal telescope
The decagonal mahogany barrel of this achromatic telescope is slightly tapered. There is a single brass draw tube and brass fittings that include sliding objective and eyepiece lens covers.
The maker’s name is inscribed on the sliding cover for the objective lens as 'Dollond / LONDON'. This is the firm started by the London optical instrument maker John Dollond (1706-61), who first patented the achromatic lens. By the time of the manufacture of this telescope, John's son Peter had taken over the firm.
