Officer of the Watch telescope
This telescope is typical of the type used on board ship in the 19th century for general observations. It has a leather-covered barrel and a single silvered-brass draw tube. The other silvered-brass fittings include a sliding eyepiece cover (of which the slide is missing) and an extending sunshade. The objective lens cap is missing. The maker’s name is inscribed on the draw tube as ‘Ross, / London’.
It was rescued from HMS ‘Bombay’ in 1864 and once belonged to James Samuel Watts RN (died 1908).
