Mug

Mug, made to the order of Alexander Davison (1750-1829), Nelson's prize agent. One of a small number of such pieces presented to Rear-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) after the battle of the Nile. The sides of the mug are painted with coloured versions of the obverse and reverse of Davison's Nile Medal. The obverse shows Peace holding an oval shield on which is Nelson's portrait inscribed 'EUROPE'S HOPE AND BRITAIN'S GLORY', and the legend 'REAR ADMIRAL LORD NELSON OF THE NILE.' The reverse shows the English and French fleets in Aboukir Bay with the legend 'ALMIGHTY GOD HAS BLESSED HIS MAJESTY'S ARMS'. In the exergue of the medal: 'VICTORY OF THE NILE AUGUST I. 1798.' Within two raised bands around the top of the mug, the gilt inscription 'Done from a Medal presented by Alexander Davison Esqr to Lord Nelson, his Officers and Men, in commemoration of the Glorious First of August 1798.' There is a third gold band around the base of the mug and the handle is decorated with gilt trelliswork.
