Cup

Chocolate cup marked AAA4738.1, cover marked AAA4738.2 and saucer marked AAA4738.3 made to the order of Alexander Davison (1750-1829), Nelson's prize agent. One of a small number of such pieces presented to Rear-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) after the battle of the Nile. The cup, lid and deep saucer are white and have gilt scroll decoration overall. The straight sided cup is painted with a coloured version of Davison's Nile Medal showing the French and English fleets in Aboukir Bay with the legend 'ALMIGHTY GOD HAS BLESSED HIS MAJESTY'S ARMS'. In the exergue of the medal: 'VICTORY OF THE NILE./AUGUST 1. 1798.' Inside the rim of the cup, the inscription: 'A TRIBUTE OF REGARD FROM ALEXR. DAVISON ESQR. ST JAMES'S SQUARE'. The cup and lid have gilt handles.
