Jug

Creamware jug, transfer-printed in black, on one side with a portrait of Rear-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805), flanked by putti with trumpets and laurels, surmounted by a naval crown, all above a plan of the Battle of the Nile, 1798, with named ships. Inscribed above: 'ADMIRAL LORD NELSON' below 'BATTLE of the NILE'. On the other side a cutter with a topsail under sail, wearing an ensign and a swallow-tailed pennant. The sea below the vessel is bordered with a trophy of classical armour, weapons, standards etc. Under the lip, hand-painted initials and a date in black are shown within a transfer-printed floral border: 'TL1799'. The portrait is taken from an engraving published by John Fairburn, London, 6 November 1798 (see PAD3761).
