Bowl

Creamware bowl, transfer-printed in black, in the centre a portrait of Rear-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805), flanked by putti with trumpets and laurels, surmounted by a naval crown. All above a plan of the battle of the Nile, 1798, with named ships. Inscribed above: 'ADMIRAL LORD NELSON' below 'BATTLE of the NILE'. Inside the border are six transfers of naval trophies. On the outside there are prints of Neptune and Amphitrite in their sea cars, shipping off a coast within a cartouche, and within a border of foliage the verse 'When this you see/remember me,/Tho' many Leagues/we distant be.' The portrait is taken from an engraving published by John Fairburn, London, November 6 1798 (see PAD3761).
