Flag of the Murray
Murray River Flag made of wool and polyester bunting, machine-sewn, with a cotton hoist. A rope and Inglefield clips are attached for hoisting. On a label on the hoist: 'Evan Evans, 680 Elizabeth Street. Melbourne 3000 1901 Designers Australian Flag Estab. 1877. Nylevans Bunting, wool polyester. Size 4' 6". ' The flag was presented to the Museum by the manager of the Pioneer Settlement, Swan Hill, Victoria 3585 in 1985.The flag has the Union Flag in the Canton. In upper half of the fly is a red cross bearing five white stars on a blue ground (emblematic of five Australian colonies). The lower part of flag has six blue and white horizontal stripes.
The flag is based on a written description in the 'South Australian Register', 7 March 1853 of a flag hoisted at Goolwa on the barge 'Eureka' to greet the first paddle steamer on the Murray River - 'The flag had the Union Jack amalgamated with the alternate stripes of the United States.' Today there are two different versions of this flag - the Upper Murray River Flag and the Lower Murray River Flag.
