Jug

Creamware jug, transfer-printed in black with a circular portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) with ships behind him and naval trophies below. Above the portrait is inscribed 'ADMIRAL NELSON', around it 'ENGLAND EXPECTS THAT EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY' and below the trophies 'VICTORY'. On the other side is an oval medallion portrait of George III, a warship and naval trophies behind. The trophies are draped with a ribbon inscribed 'LONG LIVE THE KING'. On a yellow scroll above the ship is the inscription 'SUCCESS TO COMMERCE'. Around the portrait is inscribed 'GEORGIUS III REX'. There is a pinkish-coloured flower sprig under the lip of the jug. The prints are coloured in red, yellow and blue overglaze enamels. The rim, neck and handle are decorated with black, hand-painted lines.
