Jug

Brown-glazed earthenware jug, transfer-printed in black with a circular portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) with ships behind him and naval trophies below. Beneath the portrait is inscribed 'ADMIRAL NELSON', above it, on a ribbon, 'ENGLAND EXPECTS THAT EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY'. On pennants on either side of the portrait are the inscriptions 'NILE', 'TRAFALGAR' and below the trophies 'VICTORY'. On the other side, within a foliage garland, a four line verse: 'Alas! now mouldring into dust,/Britannia's favourite Nelson lies;/May he inherit with the just,/An endless portion in the skies.' The jug has a white interior and the rim and handle are painted with stylised black foliage decoration.
