Jug
Earthenware jug, transfer-printed in blue, of waisted octagonal shape with an ochre painted rim. The transfers have lost part of their inscriptions in being cut to fit the shape of the jug. On one side, a portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) inscribed above 'NELSON', around the portrait 'ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY', below 'Shew me my Country's [Foe]s,the Her[o] cry'd,/[He saw -He] fought, He conquer'd and he di'd.' On the other side, a naval action 'VICTORY' inscribed above. Under the lip an inscription below naval trophies 'HORATIO LORD VISCOUNT NELSON VICE ADMIRAL OF THE WHITE. Knight of the Order of the Bath/Duke of Bronte in Sicily,/Grand Cross of the Order of Ferdi/nand and of Merit and Knight of/the imperial Order of the/Crescent', 'Copenhagen, Nile, Trafalg[ar]'. The neck border is also decorated with trophies of arms and there is a laurel border inside. The handle is decorated with random transfers, including inscriptions.
