Mug
Earthenware mug, transfer-printed in blue with a painted ochre rim. On one side a portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) inscribed above 'NELSON' around the portrait 'ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY' below 'Shew me my Country's Foes, the Hero cry'd,/He saw-He fought-He conquer'd-He di'd.' On the other side, a naval battle, 'VICTORY' inscribed above. There is an inscription opposite the handle, with a naval trophy above 'HORATIO LORD VISCOUNT/NELSON/VICE ADMIRAL OF THE WHITE/ Knight of the Order of the Bath/Duke of Bronte in Sicily/Grand Cross of the Order of Ferdi/nand and of Merit and Knight of/the imperial Order of the/Crescent', 'Copenhagen', 'Nile', 'Trafalgar'. The transfers are surrounded by scrolling foliage. There is a printed laurel band inside the rim. The handle is decorated with transfers and has acanthus leaf terminals.
