Bowl

Earthenware bowl, transfer-printed in blue with an ochre rim. In the centre, a portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) with ships on the horizon behind him. The portrait is flanked by trophies surrounded by floral wreaths. Around it is the inscription 'ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY', 'ADMIRAL LORD NELSON', 'Copenhagen Nile 1798', 'Trafalgar 1805'. Above the portrait, within a laurel wreath, is the verse: 'Shew me my Country's Foes,/The Hero cry'd,/He saw-He faught (sic)-He conquer'd,/And he di'd.' This is continued below 'Dear to his Country,/shall his Mem'ry live;/But sorrow drown's the Joy,/His Deeds should give.' The bowl has decorative borders printed inside and outside the rim and a moulded foot.
