Mug
Earthenware mug, transfer-printed in blue, with a fluted, slightly flared base. On one side a portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) inscribed above 'NELSON' around the portrait 'ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY' below 'Shew me my Country's Foes, the Hero cry'd,/He saw-He fought-He conquer'd-and he di'd.' On the other side, a naval battle 'VICTORY' inscribed above. There is an inscription opposite the handle, below a naval trophy: 'HORATIO LORD VISCOUNT/NELSON/VICE ADMIRAL OF THE WHITE/ Knight of the Order of the Bath/Duke of Bronte in Sicily/Grand Cross of the Order of Ferdi/nand and of Merit and Knight of/the imperial Order of the/Crescent', 'Copenhagen', 'Nile', 'Trafalgar'. There is scrolling foliage round the transfers. Inside the neck is a border of foliage and trophies of arms. The handle has laurel decoration and the rim is painted with a brown line.
