Binoculars
Galilean binoculars with a leather covered body, sliding sun shades and a central focussing wheel. The eyepieces do not focus independently. Silver plaques on each barrel record that the binoculars were presented by Queen Victoria to Henry Gilbert Hillman, who won the naval cadetship from HMS Worcester, midsummer 1890. The binoculars have a leather carrying case, on top of which is a photograph of Queen Victoria in a metal frame with a decorated, pivoted cover.
HMS Worcester was the training ship of the Thames Nautical Training College, which first opened in 1862 to train officers for the merchant fleet. It was initially called Thames Marine Officer Training School but was renamed in about 1876.
